Perfume - ⊿

Perfume - ⊿
2006
I found this CD in a used item shop in Japan and it was on my bucket list for a while now. I got it for about 700 yen, truly a steal.
My history with Perfume as a band is quite extensive. I discovered them as a young teenager who grew up with the internet of the 2000s. They definitely fueled my interest in Japan, Japanese music and pop culture. I used to listen to their music on my iPod nano with shitty headphones and downloaded from dubious sources in suboptimal audio quality. So needless to say, hearing the full depth of their music on my speakers was eye-opening. Young me did not know how different electronic music can sound on an appropriate sound system. I was blown away.
It's not just nostalgia that contribtes to my enjoyment of the album. It's frankly impressive how contemporary an album from 2006 can sound. Since the vibe Perfume usually goes for is futuristic, this was well realized. Their music still sounds fresh in 2026. It's incredibly catchy J-Pop that paved the way for a lot of East Asian pop music as we know it today.
This album will forever stay important to me for reasons that might be hard to explain to others. It sounds like stereotypical cutesy girl group pop but to me it's a lot more than that. It encapsulates the spirit of an era, an important time in my youth and also the brilliance that electronic pop music can be.
